the question
Boltt has been selected by the Van Gogh Museum to develop the architectural plans for the necessary renovation and sustainability upgrades of the building designed by Gerrit Rietveld and the exhibition wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The renovation will ensure the museum’s continued operation and the preservation of its collection.
the approach

The Van Gogh Museum is undergoing a necessary renovation focused on maintenance, sustainability improvements, and ensuring the museum buildings are future-proof. The work is being planned so that the museum can remain partially open during construction while ensuring the safety of visitors, staff, and the collection.
Boltt is responsible for the architectural detailing, the comprehensive coordination of the design and building systems, BIM management, and the permitting procedures. The team brings its experience with complex construction projects to bear, where design, engineering, and construction must be closely aligned.

“It is a special responsibility to contribute to the renovation of the Van Gogh Museum. We translate the technical complexity into clear and practical solutions, while keeping the museum’s design and continuity in mind.”
Joost Verheus – Senior Project Coordinator
The Schedule
Boltt is leading the design team and is collaborating on the project with Deerns, DGMR, and Pieters, among others. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2028.
